Report: Giants release WR Victor Cruz after seven seasons

Victor Cruz celebrates after making a catch against Dallas

This move was bound to happen as the Giants were looking to add more cap space before free agency in addition to their desire to get younger at the running back position. The NFL Network's Kimberly Jones first reported the news of the Giants' transaction Monday. Cruz's $7.9 million cap number was lowered to a more affordable figure to keep him on the roster.

The Giants have begun preparations for the 2017 season, and they're doing so without Cruz and Jennings in the plans.

Seven years in, it appears the Victor Cruz era is coming to an end for the New York Giants. Even with that said, this is a player who tallied a combined 168 receptions for 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. During a Week 6 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Cruz went down with a season ending torn patellar tendon injury. He wasn't the explosive player he had been, and instead of being the star he was the third option in the passing attack.

Cruz caught 39 passes for 586 yards and a touchdown last season, but only had 15 catches over the final nine games of the season. "I did some great things there".

Cruz's career flashed before his eyes the night of October 12, 2014, at Lincoln Financial Field. And according to Art Stapleton of The Record, the Giants have noticed.

"It's been an unbelievable journey", Cruz said in a team release. His signature play came in Week 16 of that year against against the Jets when he caught a 10-yard pass from Eli Manning and took it to the house for a 99 yard touchdown.

Jennings, who is about to turn 32, started 37 games over his three seasons with the Giants but averaged just 3.3 yards per carry in 2016.

The following season, Cruz played well once again.

"I think I have a lot of good football left ahead of me", Cruz said in a statement released by the team.
