Letter to the editor: Collins should have lobbied against DeVos' nomination

Editorial: DeVos confirmation shows overwhelming power of partisanship

The video showed DeVos then turned around and walked away, with one protester walking beside her shouting, "Go back!"

Another protester accused her of buying her nomination, saying, "She's giving money to senators and buying your way to position". Her visit was reportedly organized by the Washington teachers union, which did not support her nomination.

One person was arrested; DC Metro police are reportedly determining whether DeVos was physically assaulted.

Vice President Pence cast a historic tie-breaking vote in the senate Tuesday to get Devos confirmed. "If she wants to work with the educators who work hard every single day-in districts as diverse as McDowell County, W.Va., Detroit, and Scarsdale, N.Y. -to provide children the opportunities they deserve, we renew our invitation to have her visit America's public schools and see the strategies that work for kids". "We don't condone such acts".

DeVos eventually made her way inside the school, The Washington Post reported. WTU claims it was just there to greet DeVos and relay a strong message. "We do not want to continue a trend of starving, punishing and closing our public schools to make way for privatization and more charter schools and vouchers". Instead, school choice allows them to use our children's educations to peddle influence through crony contracts, keep citizens disenfranchised, bust unions and pander to religious extremists.

DeVos also released a written statement: "I respect peaceful protest, and I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education".

"As the chair of the Assembly Education Committee and as a parent of a public school student, I am concerned about Secretary DeVos's views on policies which I believe will negatively affect our public schools, teachers, parents and most importantly our wonderful students", state Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D-Astoria) said.

James Cultrara of the New York State Catholic Conference, which represents 500 Catholic schools, says that her opponents will be pleasantly surprised.

De Blasio said New Yorkers concerned about DeVos's impact on city schools should know that the federal government could only do so much to local control of schools.
