HTC shrinks loss in Q4 but dark clouds linger

Taiwan's HTC posts seventh consecutive quarterly loss

The company is apparently willing to continue investing into the fresh technology, and will launch a new, mysterious VR device by the end of the year.

As reported originally by CNET, HTC's chief financial officer Chialin Chang indicated the company would be looking to follow up the Vive's success with a complimentary device aimed at mobile VR users.

The plan is to introduce their mobile VR product sometime before the end of the year, Chang added.

While the hardware is one part of the puzzle, so is content, and HTC is working diligently to build out the software ecosystem ahead of the launch. The HTC Vive may be the best of its kind, but it's also the most expensive. More importantly though, it will give HTC a more affordable VR solution for those who can not afford a headset like the HTC Vive, or the gaming PC required to run it.

In spite of the outstanding performances, however, the HTC Vive sales were overtaken by Samsung with its Gear VR in 2016.

It marked the seventh consecutive quarter of losses for HTC, once a star of the intensely competitive smartphone sector.

Chia-Lin Chang, President of the Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, has revealed that HTC will attempt to turn things around in 2017 by releasing fewer devices with greater profit margins.

HTC is developing a new VR device. However, it will most likely take up the place between high-end systems like the Vive and smartphone-powered headsets like the Gear VR.

Having split off its virtual reality business into its own separate entity past year, HTC is making a big drive for virtual reality in 2017.
