Border Wall Could Cost More Than Trump Said

Analysis: US-Mexican border wall not guaranteed to reduce illegal immigration
Shortly afterward, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced that Congress would appropriate funds to build Trump's wall, which he guessed would cost $12 to $15 billion. Trump has also discussed the possibility of reducing the cost of the new Air Force One Airplane with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg.
The report assumes funding would be granted by April or May, and that construction could commence in September.
Trump also tweeted on Saturday about another aspect of his immigration policy - the legal battle over the presidential order banning entry to the United States by refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries.
A DHS spokeswoman said the department does "not comment on or confirm the potential existence of pre-decisional, deliberative documents".
DHS officials assume in the report that Congress will approve funding for the wall in April or May, and Mexico would eventually reimburse the us, even though its leaders have been adamant about not financing the project.
On Wednesday, the president told a Washington D.C. meeting of law enforcement officials gathered from around the nation that "the wall is getting designed right now". And it appears the costs will likely be shouldered, at least in part, by USA taxpayers.
Intel Pledges $7 Billion Arizona Investment in Trump Meeting
Intel announced plans for this new facility after the company's CEO Brian Krzanich met with President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, left, stands next to President Donald Trump to announce a next-generation chip factory.
The project would be completed in phases and would take some three and a half years, meaning that unless the project is started nearly immediately, it would likely remain incomplete by the end of Trump's first term in office.
"Instead of funding this costly and ineffective proxy for real action on immigration reform, we should be directing our resources toward finding cures for cancer, building schools for our children, feeding the hungry and rebuilding our bridges and our roads", Leahy said.
The plan calls for securing the border with an additional 1,250 miles of fences and walls by the end of 2020.
A source familiar with the plans said DHS may have to go to court to seek eminent domain in order to acquire some of the private land needed to cover the final and most ambitious phase.
Hurd said he had seen estimates as high as $40 billion for the barrier's construction, citing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology study released in October. Covering 26 miles it would cost an estimated $360 million (£289 million).
