Damage, injuries reported as tornadoes hit Louisiana

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said a dozen people were injured, including two who are in serious condition.

Nine tornadoes were reported Tuesday in Louisiana and MS - four of which have been confirmed - damaging property, injuring at least 31 people and prompting Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to declare a state of emergency in the state.

Tornadoes touched down in southern Louisiana Tuesday, wiping houses from their foundations and downing power lines a severe line of weather moving across the region.

The National Weather Service determined an EF-2 tornado touched down in New Orleans East with winds 111 to 135 miles per hour. Ascension Parish Sheriff's spokeswoman Allison Hudson says three people suffered minor injuries and several homes and some other buildings were damaged in the historic part of Donaldsonville, about 32 kilometres southwest of the capital.

A unsafe tornado has ripped through east New Orleans, causing severe damage to buildings and homes and leaving thousands without power.

Multiple tornado warnings have been issued throughout the area. A spokesperson from New Orleans-based University Medical Center said it had received seven people with tornado-related injuries.

Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency throughout Louisiana, while search and rescue teams scoured the landscape for survivors.

There were reports of some heavily damaged homes and businesses in the city's east, but so far no reports of fatalities, Burns said.

Angela Lasalle stayed with her daughter on Tuesday night after she lost power in her home. The news source further noted that a local resident, James Thomas, is the only one in his neighborhood whose house was not affected by the tornado.
