Volkswagen Group Is Officially The Worlds Largest Carmaker
The Japanese giant had snatched the sales crown from long-time leader General Motors in 2009, ceding the title only once during the past eight years.
General motors held the position as the worlds largest vehicle maker for almost seventy years until Toyota took over the crown in 2008. The Department for Transport's Vehicle Certification Agency, the UK's national approval authority for new road vehicles, has announced that it will re-run laboratory tests on engines and compare the results with emissions from on-the-road tests in the wake of the VW test-rigging scandal.

Auto analysts are saying Volkswagen (ETR:VOW3) may stay at the top for the next few years due to their strong presence in the Chinese market.
The company said Monday it sold 10.2 million vehicles world-wide in 2016, up 0.2% from the year before. The maker of Opel and Cadillac cars, GM is expected to disclose their 2016 figures next week. This was less than the 10.3 million sold by Volkswagen, which posted record high global sales despite its diesel emissions scandal.
By another measure, though, Toyota remains ahead of VW, profit.
Nissan Motor and Honda Motor also expanded overseas production.
The battle between the two carmakers is expected to escalate this year and the victor will be largely determined by sales in manufacturers two largest markets - China and the US. Strong sales from China were one of the key reasons for the spike in sales while only few VW's tainted diesel models were sold. GM was the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades until Toyota surpassed it in 2008. According to published figures, Volkswagen delivered 10.31 million cars (1.03 Crore) in 2016.
Volkswagen's victory comes after its image and share price was hit by an emissions scandal in 2015.
The company downplayed their fall from the top spot by saying: "At Toyota, we are focused on chasing volume". It expects vehicle sales in the USA to slow in 2017 - and for its global sales to remain flat.
German prosecutors widen VW emissions probe
In the US , seven former and current VW executives not including Winterkorn have been charged in connection with the scandal. Winterkorn ran the carmaker for more than eight years and oversaw a doubling in sales and an nearly tripling in profit.
